How is my chip card more secure?
The chip on your debit card creates a unique transaction code for each purchase that cannot be used again. With this extra security, the new chip card makes it extremely difficult for information to be stolen.
Why is HCU converting to an chip card?
The chip technology offers more financial protection for HCU. Starting last year, new laws were passed that impacts the liability for fraudulent charges. In the past, the credit union was required to pay fraudulent charges from a merchant. Your new card also provides an extra level of security and is easier to use at places that are already using chip card technology.
What if a merchant does not have chip card technology? Will I still sign or use my PIN for my transaction?
You will still have to swipe your card as usual and follow the normal point-of-sale purchase. The signature requirement will be based on your verification method. If you choose debit for your transaction method, you will need to enter your PIN. If you choose credit for your transaction method, you will need to sign for your transaction.
When will I get my chip card?
The chip cards should have arrived to debit card holders in February 2017. HCU advises you to activate your card immediately upon arrival.
Can I keep the same debit card number?
Yes, your card number will stay the same. However, the expiration date and CVV code (on back of card) will be different on your new chip card. Make sure to update any information, including your automatic payments with the new expiration date and CVV code.
