Over the
past couple of weeks a large number of you
have either received a letter or e-mail from
us regarding this “breach”,
or you have heard about it in the media.
HFCU wants to assure you that our staff
is working hard to reduce both the fraudulent
activity risk and any inconvenience this
may cause you.
The breach originated with
Heartland Payment Systems, one of the third
largest credit and debit card processors
in the country. Their processing system
was breached, sometime around mid January
2009, when malicious software was used
to enable the theft of card data from merchants
on their system. Heartland has since been
working with law enforcement and now believe
the intrusion has been contained. However,
during the breach they have identified
a number of cards that may have
been compromised. This may have occurred
by making a debit card purchase at a merchant
that utilizes Heartlands system from the
period of May 15th through November 13th,
2008. Even
though your card may have been identified
it doesn’t mean that your card will
have fraudulent charges on it.
HFCU has taken important steps to protect
you if you debit card has been identified.
In most cases we have blocked your card
and ordered a new card and pin number to
assure your protection against this potential
threat. If you detect any suspicious activity
on your account, notify the Credit Union
immediately.
The Credit Union and MasterCard
Debit take very seriously our obligation
to protect the security and privacy of
our members. We apologize for any inconvenience
this may cause you. |
